I am the founding editor and publisher of Wonderground, a cross-disciplinary print and digital publication exploring questions of nature, culture and care.

Wonderground began as The Planthunter in 2013, an online publication I founded to create space for ideas that had no home in the existing design publishing landscape. In 2021 the first print edition of Wonderground was produced. It sold out in six weeks.

At its peak, The Planthunter/Wonderground reached 50,000 unique monthly website visitors, 11,500 email newsletter subscribers and 84,000 Instagram followers. The print journal ran to 2,500 copies per issue and was distributed to over 50 independent bookshops, art galleries and design stores across Australia, New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and Japan — including the National Gallery of Australia, Heide Museum of Modern Art, McNally Jackson in New York, Magculture in London, and Athenaeum in Amsterdam.

Each issue was built around a thematic inquiry and drew together an intentionally diverse range of contributors: landscape architects, ecologists, poets, artists, farmers, First Nations writers and scientists. Contributors included Monica Gagliano, Neha Kale, Emily Jacir, Ali Cobby Eckermann, Jazz Money, Janet Laurence, Bill Henson, David Whyte, Paul Kelly, Sue Stuart-Smith, Jane Gleeson-White and many others. The geographic and intellectual range of those contributors demonstrated that the questions Wonderground held do not belong to any single discipline.

Building and sustaining The Planthunter / Wonderground over more than a decade developed a particular set of capabilities: distilling complex ideas into accessible, engaging prose; seeing connections between seemingly disparate fields and voices; single-handedly managing the full arc of a publication — editorial, design, production processes; building and maintaining relationships with writers, artists, commercial partners, and philanthropists across the globe; and developing an intuitive understanding of how ideas move through audiences and why some land and others don't. These skills are the foundation of the research, editorial, and communications work I now offer.
